What Do the Icons and Settings on My Vape Screen Mean?
If you’ve upgraded to a vape with a display, congratulations—you now have access to a wide range of customisation options. But first, let’s break down the most common vape screen elements and what they do.
🔋 Battery Level
Battery level is one of the most essential pieces of information displayed on your vape screen. It tells you how much charge is left in your device and can appear in a few different formats depending on the model:
- Battery Bar: A visual icon that fills or empties as your charge level changes.
- Percentage (%): A precise digital readout, e.g., 78%, for more accurate tracking.
- Coloured Indicators: Some vapes use colour coding (green = full, yellow = medium, red = low) to make it easier to see your battery status at a glance.
Understanding your battery level not only helps you avoid the frustration of a dead device but also ensures you maintain consistent performance. Vapes running on low battery can sometimes produce weaker hits or slower coil response times, especially in more powerful pod kits or devices with adjustable wattage.
Most modern vapes, like those from Vaporesso, Oxva, and Geekvape, will also show battery warnings or prompts when the charge is critically low—often flashing red or displaying a low voltage message. These safety features are in place to protect both you and your device.
Pro Tip:
To prolong your battery’s lifespan:
- Avoid fully depleting the battery before charging.
- Unplug once it reaches 100%.
- Use the charger provided by the manufacturer or one with the correct voltage rating.
Keeping your battery level topped up not only supports better performance—it also extends the overall lifespan of your vape kit.
📊 Puff Counter
The puff counter is a built-in tracking feature on most modern vape devices that shows how many puffs you’ve taken since the last reset. Whether you’re a new vaper or a seasoned enthusiast, this small but mighty feature offers valuable insights into your vaping habits.
What is a Puff Counter For?
- Monitor Usage:
It helps you understand how frequently you’re vaping throughout the day. This is particularly useful if you’re transitioning from cigarettes and want to keep your nicotine intake in check. - Support Quitting Goals:
If you’re actively trying to cut down or quit nicotine altogether, the puff counter can act as a personal progress tracker. You can set daily or weekly targets to gradually reduce your usage over time. - Track Coil Longevity:
Most coils have a rough lifespan based on puff count or millilitres of e-liquid consumed. By keeping an eye on your puff total, you can better predict when it’s time to change your coil—avoiding burnt taste or performance drops. - Battery & E-Liquid Estimation:
In some cases, puff count can also help you estimate how quickly your battery or e-liquid runs out, giving you a better sense of when to recharge or refill.
How to Reset It
Most devices let you reset the puff counter manually—usually by pressing the fire button a specific number of times (e.g., 4 or 7 rapid presses). Check your vape’s user manual or our brand-specific guides above for full instructions on resetting.
Pro Tip:
Consider resetting your puff counter each morning. This way, you can track daily usage patterns more clearly and make more informed choices about your vaping behaviour.
⚡ Wattage Output
Wattage is one of the most important settings you’ll see on your vape screen. Displayed as a number followed by a “W” (e.g. 12W or 40W), this figure represents the power output being delivered from your battery to the coil. It’s what controls how hot your coil gets—and in turn, how much vapour and flavour your device produces.
What Does Wattage Do?
- Higher Wattage = More Power
- Produces warmer vapour
- Creates bigger clouds
- Intensifies flavour
- Uses more e-liquid and battery
- Can reduce coil lifespan
- Lower Wattage = Less Power
- Offers a cooler, smoother hit
- Conserves battery and liquid
- Prolongs coil life
- Ideal for new vapers or high-nicotine e-liquids like nic salts
Some devices display this setting as Low, Medium, or High, rather than an exact number. This is particularly common on simplified or beginner-friendly pod kits.
Why It Matters
Getting the wattage right is essential to your vaping experience. If the wattage is too low, your vapour production may be minimal and the flavour muted. If it’s too high—especially beyond the recommended range of your coil—you can burn your coil prematurely and end up with harsh, unpleasant hits.
Every coil has an optimal wattage range printed on the side (e.g. “Recommended: 10–14W”). Always stay within that range to maximise performance and prevent damage.
Adjusting the Wattage
How you adjust wattage depends on your device. Common methods include:
- Pressing the fire button 3 times to enter wattage mode
- Using up/down buttons to increase or decrease power
- Switching between preset modes like Eco, Standard, or Boost (which adjust wattage automatically)
Check your device’s manual or refer to our brand-specific guides above for step-by-step instructions.
Pro Tip:
When testing a new coil, start at the lower end of the recommended wattage range. Gradually increase it over time to avoid burning the cotton inside before it’s fully saturated.
🔁 Resistance Level (Ohms)
Resistance controls how easily electricity flows through the coil. That flow affects how hot the coil gets, how much vapour is produced, and how intense your vape feels.
- Lower Resistance (Sub-Ohm: <1.0Ω):
- Heats up faster
- Produces more vapour
- Delivers a warmer and more intense hit
- Consumes more e-liquid and battery
- Best for freebase nicotine and Direct-to-Lung (DTL) vaping
- Higher Resistance (Above-Ohm: ≥1.0Ω):
- Heats more slowly
- Produces less vapour
- Offers a smoother, cooler vape
- Conserves e-liquid and power
- Ideal for nic salts and Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) vaping
Choosing the Right Resistance for Your Needs
- 0.4Ω – 0.7Ω:
Great for freebase nicotine, bold flavour, and cloud chasing. Suited to advanced vapers using open pod systems or mod kits. - 0.8Ω – 1.2Ω:
The sweet spot for most nic salt vapers and those switching from disposables. Delivers satisfying throat hits with low vapour output—great for discretion. - 1.4Ω and up:
Perfect for ultra-smooth MTL hits, especially for those seeking a cigarette-like experience with minimal vapour and gentle nicotine delivery.
Why Resistance Matters
Understanding coil resistance helps you:
- Choose the right e-liquid (e.g. nic salts for higher resistance, freebase for lower)
- Optimise flavour and throat hit
- Avoid coil burnout or misfiring
- Stay within safe wattage limits
Pro Tip:
Always check the recommended wattage printed on your coil. Using the wrong settings can overheat your coil or deliver weak, unsatisfying performance.
🔒 Lock & Mode Icons
Modern vape devices often display helpful icons or indicators that show whether key features are locked or active, as well as which power mode you’re currently using. These icons play a crucial role in both user safety and performance control.
🔒 Lock Icons: What They Mean and Why They Matter
Lock icons typically appear when your vape’s firing button or settings are locked. This feature helps prevent:
- Accidental Firing:
If you keep your vape in your pocket or bag, the button might get pressed unintentionally—wasting battery or even burning your coil. Locking prevents this. - Unwanted Setting Changes:
In many devices, adjusting wattage or modes also involves button presses. A locked device protects your setup from being altered by mistake.
How to Lock/Unlock Your Vape:
- Most devices require five rapid button presses to lock or unlock.
- Some devices offer partial locks (e.g. locking just the settings, but not the fire button).
When your vape is locked, you may see a padlock icon, a flashing light, or the word “LOCKED” on the screen, depending on the model.
⚙️ Power Mode Icons: Eco, Standard & Boost
Power modes are preset performance levels that adjust your wattage or power curve automatically, offering a convenient way to customise your vape without manual tweaking.
- Eco Mode:
- Conserves battery and coil life
- Produces a lighter hit
- Ideal for casual vaping or extending device life during the day
- Standard Mode:
- Balanced output
- Delivers solid flavour and vapour without excessive battery drain
- Perfect for everyday use
- Boost Mode (sometimes called “Power” or “Turbo”):
- Delivers a stronger, more intense hit
- Produces more vapour and flavour
- Consumes more battery and e-liquid
- Best for short, satisfying sessions
Your current mode is often displayed as a word or icon on the screen, depending on your device. On some models, you’ll need to press the button twice quickly to cycle between modes.
Why These Icons Are Important
Lock and mode icons make your device safer, more efficient, and easier to use—especially when you’re out and about. Whether you’re preventing misfires or switching to Eco mode to get through the last 10% of your battery, these features help you stay in control.
Pro Tip:
If your vape is firing strangely or producing unexpected results, check that it’s not in the wrong mode—or accidentally locked.
Why Vape Display Settings Matter
Your vape display isn’t just for show—it’s a tool that can help you:
- Extend coil life
- Improve flavour
- Optimise nicotine delivery
- Save battery life
- Reduce e-liquid consumption
Let’s take a closer look at the key settings and how to use them to your advantage.
Key Vape Settings Explained
Wattage Adjustment
Wattage controls how much power is sent to your coil. Higher wattage means:
- More vapour
- Warmer, stronger hits
- Faster coil burnout
Always stay within your coil’s recommended wattage range to avoid dry hits or damage.
Ohm Resistance (Ω)
Your coil’s resistance affects how it vapes:
- Higher Resistance (1.0Ω+): Cooler, milder draw—ideal for nic salts and stealth vaping.
- Lower Resistance (0.4–0.7Ω): Warmer, more intense hits—better for freebase nicotine and sub-ohm vaping.
Your device will auto-detect the coil’s resistance, but it’s still important to pair the right e-liquid with the right coil.
Puff Counter & Reset
Tracking your puffs helps with quitting or reducing nicotine intake. You can:
- Monitor daily use
- Time coil changes
- Set personal usage goals
Most devices allow you to reset your puff count with a few quick button presses.
Power Modes: Eco, Standard & Boost
Many vapes come with preset power modes:
- Eco Mode: Less vapour, longer battery life, slower coil wear
- Standard Mode: Balanced for flavour and longevity
- Boost Mode: More vapour and flavour, but higher e-liquid and power use
These modes simplify the process of adjusting wattage for users who prefer presets over manual control.
